The Swan Inn

THE SWAN INN (tel 01527 861213) Welcomes everyone

The Swan Inn, which has a small hotel attached, is opposite the Peter Cadbury Wetlands Trust Nature Reserve and walking distance to both Webbs Garden Centre and Worcestershire's leading watersports centre at The Sailing Centre.

The refurbishment during early 2008 was done sympathetically retaining the features of this old coaching inn whilst offering a high standard of comfort.  The bar has been modernised and opened up but the open fire still welcomes customers on a cold winters evening. At the rear of the pub customers can enjoy al Fresco dining seated comfortably under heated jumbrellas on the patio area; on warmer days the benched seating on the lawn provides a perfect spot to enjoy a meal with a cool glass of wine.

Be assured of a warm welcome; good food; well kept traditional beers and wines to suit all palate and purses: a truly enjoyable experience.    Try the new menu with the highest quality meat, fruit and vegetables.

History

Situated on the main A38 which was and remains the main route between Worcester and Birmingham, the Swan Inn at Upton Warren was an important coaching inn; before the railway came to Birmingham four coaches a day stopped at the inn en route from Worcester to Birmingham. When the Birmingham to London railway opened in 1835 it was far quicker to go to London on the train and the coach traffic to Birmingham increased greatly; at one time no less than 20 coaches a day stopped at The Swan and other coaching inns on the way.

The very nature of a rural village like ours means that the local public house - The Swan Inn - ranks along side the church as a meeting place where the ups and downs of life may be discussed and contemplated. We thought it would be a good idea to home in on the characters central to any pub, the licencees. On the Local History Page there is some interesting background about  H T Gazey landlord around the turn of the 19th into 20th century, noted below are some others with (very) rough dates, if anyone can help add to the list or aid in our accuracy with dates and names please contact either Geraint at The Swan or Annie on this web site.
